What Do
Puppets Do...
Mrs. Urban's Class published this
book showing photographs of each student
with the puppet The Art Lady had helped
each of them to imagine and create.
A beautiful project for both Boys and
Girls alike and the book is a wonderful
keepsake for them.

A GREAT QUESTION, WHAT DO THEY DO?

Start with four little
first-grade boys running rampant
in an elementary school; each
with whopping anger issues.
Next, add the teacher challenged
to “do something with
them - ANYTHING!”
What resulted was the creation
of a unique, highly visual
storybook that weaves within it
a message of hope for angry
children (and their puzzled
peers) everywhere. |

No

Debbie Fox and Marie Suarez have
produced a quality guide to South
Florida for children. The project, which
involved gathering information from both
adults and children, took more than two
years to complete, and was finally
published in 1996. The care and
attention devoted to the project are
reflected in the presentation and the
timelessness of the information.
Sharing the Sun examines museums, the
arts, historical sites and community
service activities as well as the
better-known beaches, parks,
attractions, and sporting events from
Palm Beach to Key West. Fox and Suarez
include a brief description of each
place or activity arranged by type of
activity and location, followed by
addresses, phone numbers and a general
price guide. Additional "fun facts,"
tips and suggestions on how to make the
most of the visit, and suggested games
and activities are scattered throughout
the margins.
Living up to its name as a kid's guide,
the text is larger and the information
is offered in short declarative
sentences so children can directly
participate in planning a family
vacation. Much of the marginal
information, as well as many of the
drawings, was actually provided by
children who live in the South Florida
area.
One of the best aspects of this vacation
guide is the emphasis not just on
children, but on the many cultural,
environmental and community-oriented
activities that children will enjoy as
much or more than the traditional theme
park attractions. Sharing the Sun
provides a unique perspective for
planning a family vacation, and an
opportunity for
children (and their parents!) to see and
experience activities that they can
become involved in, and often continue
at home.
Fox and Suarez have done an outstanding
job of exploring South Florida, and
perhaps, if we're lucky, they may one
day tackle the rest of the state.
Deanna Lloyd
Great Resource!
Everything that's
worth doing in South Florida with children is in
this book. Sharing the Sun is well written,
organized and easy to use. Our vacationing
New England family uses this
book often to avoid boring weekends. There's
more to South Florida than South Beach!
